The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent | Movie Review

I had such a good time watching The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent that I want anyone reading this to stop and go watch it. It’s a blast.

Going into the movie, I decided that I wouldn’t watch a trailer or look into what the movie was about. I knew it was Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal and that Cage was playing a fictionalized version of himself, but other than that, I didn’t know a lot about it. That was the best decision ever.

Pascal is brilliant in his role as “Cage Superfan” Javi Gutierrez. After a few movie failures, Javi pays Nick (Yes, it’s ‘Nick’ and not “Nic’.) $1 million to come to his birthday party. I loved that Nick isn’t feeling it until the two guys bond over their mutual love for Paddington 2. All of this was a legit laugh out loud situation.

Wait, what? The CIA is here? They tell much that they’re investigating Javi as an arms dealer and that he’s currently kidnapped the daughter of a politician trying to root out crime and corruption. And! The CIA agents are Tiffany Haddish and Ike Barinholtz! Amazing stuff.

Javi and Nick have a fantastic few scenes of them tripping on LSD which I couldn’t get enough of. But…

Then, this movie explodes. I was not prepared for the action movie-filled violence that this turns into. I thought it was just going to be a funny, quirky film with some light action scenes, but NOPE!

I won’t spoil anything about where the movie goes from here, but I was kept on my toes throughout. I can’t recommend this one highly enough. I had a great time.
