Star Trek: Discovery: “Red Directive” & “Under the Twin Moons” | TV Review

Star Trek: Discovery is back with their fifth and final season of the Paramount+ show, and I’m all in! They opened with a double episode, and we will be joining with the crew of the Discovery until the end of May.

I won’t lie. When the early previews for the season came out with “the greatest treasure in the known galaxy”, I might have rolled my eyes a little bit. I don’t think Star Trek needs to consistently go after some “big thing” to be great. As always though, I was willing to give it a chance.

It’s totally worth it.

When it was revealed that this “greatest treasure” is related to the Progenitors revealed in ONE episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I was pumped. What a cool twist on the treasure being, essentially, the creation of life. This is exciting and could go many different ways!

I thought both episodes were solid bits of television, but I enjoyed “Red Directive” the most. It does help that I’m a big fan of Olatunde Osunsanmi. (I also can’t wait for the Star Trek: Section 31 movie that he’s directing.)

I’m very hopeful that I will come out of this season with positive feelings about Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham. She’s been a bit of a struggle for me throughout the show, and I don’t really know why. I think her relationship with David Ajala’s Cleveland Booker might be what finally lands her for me. I’m pulling for her.

With Saru (Doug Jones) seemingly departing the main for the rest of the season, he’s being replaced by Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). I really enjoyed his character in those first two episodes, but I’ll miss Saru. He was a favorite of mine.

Overall, Discovery started its final season positively, and I can’t wait to see where we’re going next.
