The Star Beast: I watched Doctor Who for the first time

I’ve always wanted to start watching Doctor Who, but I didn’t know where to begin. There were so many episodes. I was intimidated, so I never tried. Well, I’m here to tell you, I finally watched Doctor Who.

Okay, I only watched one episode of Doctor Who, but I really liked it. I watched the first of the new 60th Anniversary specials titled “The Star Beast”, and it was a lot of fun.

I remember the first time I realized I wanted to watch Doctor Who, and that was when I was watching Jessica Jones on Netflix. David Tennant was playing Kilgrave, and I really liked his performance. Everything that I was reading about him kept saying “You need to watch Doctor Who.” At that time, I made the plan to watch the show, but I’ve never gotten around to doing it. Finally, that has changed.

In recent years with things like the MCU and the Mando-verse in Star Wars, there’s always been people complaining that they have to watch everything to understand the most recent story. The latest was with Ahsoka where there were complaints that if they didn’t watch Rebels they wouldn’t know what’s going on. After watching that show, I never felt that way, because I thought they did a good enough job explaining the setup to everything

Joanna Robinson with the House of R Podcast said that she understood some of the talking points but also thought that there was a big FOMO problem with those people who felt like they were missing out on something that wasn’t required to have seen. I thought that was a great point, and I had a follow-up conversation with a friend where he said that it was part that and part where people feel like they need to know everything about every character that you see on the screen, otherwise the show or movie you’re watching is not as enjoyable.

Of course, that was my fear going into this doctor who special. As I said, I’ve never seen an episode before, and I knew they were bringing David Tennant and Catherine Tate back. There were some trepidations, but the opening of the episode explain the whole back story that was relevant to the story they were going to tell. I thought they did a great job. I knew that I would need to go in and watch all of his time as the doctor to fully appreciate things, but I don’t feel like I needed more than that to watch this episode and enjoy it.

One of things I knew I would appreciate about this show is the cheesiness of the aliens and the monsters, and they didn’t disappoint. The headliner was The Meep who was an adorably soft looking plot twist that I never saw coming. Sure, looking back, it was obvious, but when the reveal happened, I gasped. The Wrarth Warriors were also great in their appearance.

Overall, I had a great time watching this episode, and I can’t wait for the next one.
