I went out to see Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on New Year’s Day. It’s the finale of the Zack Snyder-based DC Extended Universe before we move on to James Gunn’s DC Universe. Let’s just say that I’m glad we’re here, and I’m ready to move on.
I’ve now seen every single one of these DCEU movies, and the first Aquaman is one of my favorites. They managed to take what is on paper one of the goofiest heroes in DC Comics and one of the hardest to translate onto the big screen and made it super fun. They leaned into the silliness of what Aquaman brings to the table and nailed it.
While Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom doesn’t quite hit the notes of the first one, it’s still a fun movie for the most part. I liked the back and forth between Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson. I thought they did a good job.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II did his best with the material for Black Manta, but I just don’t feel like that character really landed for me. He should’ve been the big bad in this movie, and he just wasn’t. It was a shame.
Oh! Do you know what I forgot about from the first Aquaman movie when I sat down in the theater to watch this? I forgot that Boba Fett was in this movie. Temura Morrison was much better in this film than in the first. It was a pleasant surprise. I’m happy for him.
Overall, I didn’t enjoy Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as much as I enjoyed Aquaman. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see it though. It was a lot of stupid fun, and they continued to lean into the cheesiness that is Aquaman.
