I’m really enjoying Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+ so far, but we had to delay watching episode 5 “A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers” until late in the week. It was totally worth it when I realized that this was the episode featuring the debut of wrestling legend Adam “Edge” Copeland.
Edge showed up on a motorcycle playing Ares, son of Zeus and the god of war. He offers to help our heroes as long as they do something for him: find and bring back his shield that is lost at a local amusement park. He just fails to tell them that he lost his shield at the theme park of Hephaestus when he was hooking up with his wife Aphrodite. Pretty important facts there!
Grover stays behind for the mission, and we get some fantastic alone time with Percy and Annabeth. The through-line of friendship and sacrifice in discussions between the two has been great, and the sacrifice in this episode was powerful.
We’re very into the series at this point and can’t wait for the next episode every week. I’m definitely going to read at least the first book after this first season ends, and I’m excited to dig in. The preview for next week’s episode reminded me that Lin Manuel Miranda is playing Hermes, and I’ll be completely honest with you that he’s not completely my jam.
Still! Can’t wait until next week to see how the story progresses. There are only three episodes left in the season which is sad but exciting as the same.
