Delilah Dawson delivered Phasma, and it’s different. The title of this review was coined by Delilah herself at (I believe) Salt Lake Comic Con. This book is truly Star Wars meets Mad Max.
With JJ Abrams giving us basically nothing of Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens, it left the docket wide open for this book to explore whatever it wanted. And, Spoiler Alert, Captain Phasma is a villain.
She’s a brutal, ruthless killer who shows no remorse for her actions. Phasma cares about Phasma. Finally, a non-redeemable villain.
There are a couple of spots in the story that drag, but they don’t feel overwhelming at any point. Weaving in corporatists and an environmental disaster is a new twist in a Star Wars story, and it’s well done.
You also learn a lot about Phasma’s chief First Order rival Cardinal and Brendol Hux.
It’s well worth the pick up and is as different a Star Wars book as anything you’ve ever read before.
