Shōgun is the best show on TV

Shōgun delivered another great episode with ‘Tomorrow Is Tomorrow’. We’re all better off today because FX decided to make this show. I have zero idea how many people are actually watching it, but I hope it’s a lot.

Every scene that Hiroyuki Sanada appears in is made better by his gravitas. It helps make everything feel bigger and more important than it actually is. Sanada is the star of this show, and it’s obvious.

I think we’ll be talking about Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko as the breakout star is this series. She’s been getting more and more roles in Hollywood in recent years, but her excellence here may catapult her to even bigger roles in the future.

The political intrigue in the series is riveting. Toranaga is juggling not only his relationship with Ishido and the other regents as they move to impeach him, but now he has this white guy who has shown up claiming that the Portuguese are essentially trying to take and rule Japan through the Catholic Church who are willing combatants.

All of the fighting scenes have been well choreographed in this series so far. The final big scene in this episode with Mariko’s husband Buntaro sacrificing himself to help Toranaga and his asked escape was moving despite the bad vibes that he was giving earlier.

This is a nitpick, but I think my least favorite thing about the show is the guy playing John Blackthorne. It feels like he’s overacting just a little bit too much, and I’m just not a huge fan of his voice. Everything feels a little forced? It’s not a huge deal though.

The show was excellent, and I can’t speak highly enough of it. I can’t wait to see how it progresses! FX has made a lot of great shows over the years, but this might be the best of them.
