Sonic the Hedgehog | Movie Review

I’ve been wanting to get around to watching the first two Sonic the Hedgehog movies for a while now. Everyone I know that has seen them raves about them. Plus, with the third movie coming out this year, what a perfect time to get started!

I loved this movie. Sonic the Hedgehog is fantastic.

It was very funny. I’ve been a fan of James Marsden forever now, and who isn’t a fan of Ben Schwartz? Their interactions really made the movie, and I don’t think the movie lands as well as it does without the tender moments between them. Who would’ve thought that Marsden and Sonic would have such great chemistry.

Jim Carrey was his normal brilliant self. Playing Dr. Robotnik is a role that was just truly destined for Jim. I’m not sure anyone else could’ve played it honestly. We’re so lucky to live in a world where his genius is on display.

I remember the controversy and fixing of Sonic’s design for this movie. I thought the speed gags were all funny and looked fantastic. I enjoyed the flight scene at the bar. It was reminiscent of and clearly inspired by the scene in X-Men: Days of Future Past, when Quicksilver does something very similar in the fight at the Pentagon. Still, it was executed to perfection and was very funny.

The other scene that I loved was the fight at the end between Sonic and Robotnik when he uses the rings to teleport from San Francisco to Paris to the Great Wall of China to Egyptian pyramids and then finally back to Montana. I thought this was a wonderful concept and really helped demonstrate how powerful Robotnik was with one quill from Sonic.

I can’t wait to watch the sequel now. That tease of Tails at the end! I’m excited.
