Star Trek: Discovery: “Jinaal” | TV Review

This week’s episode of Star Trek: Discovery “Jinaal” wasn’t a great episode, but it was definitely more good than bad. Oh, this episode reminded me of the thing. I like the least about Michael Burnham.

The episode picks up right where the previous one left off. The Discovery Is looking for the next piece of the puzzle for the Progenitor technology with a visit to Trill. I like visiting planets that we’ve been to before to continue to build out the lore of that location.

The idea that they need to speak with the Trill hosting the symbiote that was in Jinaal 800 years ago was a fun twist. I liked the way that all of that went down, and the fact that Dr. Hugh Culber was involved made it even better! I’ve always liked his character.

The journey to the clue… Things aren’t as they seem. Hidden compartments. Invisible (cloaking) monsters. Book gets hurt! This was a little stressful. I should’ve known Book would be fine with the reveal that he is tangentially related to our main villain, and they haven’t confronted each other yet.

The two subplots were ok. Nothing to write home about.

The episode ends with Mal in disguise, planting what I’m assuming is a tracking device on Adira. I would imagine that we see the payoff for that next week.

I remember the thing that I disliked the most about Michael, and that is all of the conversations that take place in a loud whisper. Why are they doing this to me?

This was a tidy little episode. I liked learning a little bit more about the planet Trill, and the Discovery crew got a little closer to the end game.
