Star Wars: The Acolyte: “Destiny” | TV Review

I have nothing but good things to say about the latest episode of The Acolyte because I love when Star Wars gets weird with the Force.

Finally, the flashback episode to show us what happened in the past that has led Mae to tracking down Indara, Sol, Kelnacca, and Torbin to kill. Or… Did it?

I think, in classic Rashomon style, we have just seen everything from the Coven, Mae, and Osha’s perspective (the latter two, obviously, being children at the time). For the most part, we heard about the evil Jedi banishing these witches from the known galaxy (Though, I will say that they didn’t specify the Jedi were responsible.), the Jedi “hacking” through the gate of their fortress, the Jedi taking children, etc. My assumption is that we will see, at some point, what really happened here.

But, until then, let’s talk what we did see.

Mother Aniseya and Mother Koril are the leaders of a coven of witches based on the planet Brendok. They are the mothers of Mae and Osha — Aniseya creating them (through what sounds like some kind of dark magic) and Koril birthing them. I thought the design for both Aniseya and Koril were awesome. Visually, they looked so cool.

Beyond that, we really don’t know much about this coven of witches. We don’t get an official name of their group, only that they refer to the Force as the Thread.

The twins who played young Mae and Osha were fantastic. A great performance from them. I was really stuck by Mae being all-in on staying in the coven while Osha was the complete opposite and ready to leave. This very easily led to the big conflict between the two, and it makes sense and is a realistic thing that could come between siblings — the decision to stay or move on.

Also, can we just touch briefly on Mae’s serial killer-ness of nearly torturing that animal at the beginning? Yikes!

So, let’s just get to the big meeting. Indara, her Padawan Torbin, Sol, and Kelnacca show up. Everything is so tense. The Jedi seem so aloof and uncaring. Mother Aniseya briefly takes control of Torbin’s body and mind. She is powerful.

Indara citing “Republic law” in that other groups aren’t allowed to train children in the Force is wild. It makes sense in a world where the Jedi continue to grow more and more involved with the Senate, but it was wild to hear say that

Then, disaster. We see Mae start a fire in Osha’s bedroom door, but there’s a big explosion elsewhere and a lot of other stuff is on fire. Also, all of the witches are dead? What on earth happened here? Sol finds Mae, and they escape.

As Sol is comforting Mae on the ship, we briefly see Torbin in the background with his huge scar on his face that he very much didn’t have the day before. My assumption is that we will see just how Kelnacca, I assume, clawed him.

And, this is all true, from a certain point of view. But, it leaves me asking a question, again…

What actually happened on Brendok?
