I rewatched X-Men: The Animated Series to prep for X-Men ’97

You know, I always try to remind people that their nostalgia for things they loved as kids doesn’t always carry over to that thing actually being good. With X-Men ’97 getting ready to come out, I felt like I had to rewatch one of my favorite shows as a kid X-Men: The Animated Series, and I finished this week.

I’ll be the first to admit, it’s a very choppy rewatch.

In my mind, this show was excellent. Every single episode was a banger with zero negatives. Ok, so, if I’m honest, at least 30% of the episodes are pretty bad. I was shocked.

I always am trying to keep in mind that their budget for this show was probably really low and not judge them too harshly, because I do love the show.

Essentially, if the episodes were part of a multi-episode story arc, it seems pretty clear that that’s where the budget went. Those episodes looked the best, and they had the best stories. I could honestly have gone without ever seeing many of the standalone episodes.

Despite having said all of that, I love this show, man. So much of it brought back memories flooding to me, and you just can’t replace that nostalgia high.

One of my biggest disappointments from the Fox era of X-Men movies was that they never put them in their classic costumes. I have the utmost faith when these characters are in live action in the MCU, that they will be in their uniforms. Give me those classic yellow colors on everything. Straight into my veins, please.

X-Men ’97 comes out tomorrow on Disney+, and I can’t wait. The animation looks great, and I’ve only heard good things about the three episodes that they screened recently in LA.
