X-Men ’97: “Tolerance Is Extinction, Part 1” | TV Review

X-Men ’97 continues to be the best version of the X-Men that we’ve ever seen on our screens, whether it’s television or film. The latest episode, “Tolerance Is Extinction, Part 1” is no exception.

The episode featured some amazing fight scenes. Nightcrawler and Wolverine paired up for an amazing fight against some of Bastion’s human/sentinel hybrids. When Nightcrawler pulled Wolverine with him in the teleportation and we got to go with them, that was extra special. Also! The Summers Family teaming up to fight was so awesome.

However, with all that said, let’s get to the point.

“Magneto was right.”

The monologue that Dr. Valerie Cooper relays to Bastion and Sinister at the end of the episode anchors what this whole season has been about. Everyone already knew this, but the show agrees now, too.

“You know, in Genosha, I felt a lot of things: pain, grief, admiration for those who fought despite the odds. But you know what the oddest thing was? No one seemed shocked or surprised — not even me. Yes, I was scared, but really I just had the most profound sense of déjà vu, as if past, present, and future didn’t matter and never had, because we always end up in the same ugly place. Thing is, Magneto knows us better than Charles ever did, knows we know better, that most of us experience tragedies like Genosha as a bit of déjà vu before getting on with our day. But the scariest thing about Genosha wasn’t the death or the chaos. It was a thought, the only sane thought you can have when being chased by giant robots that were built to crush you: Magneto was right.”

Magneto proceeds to send what I’m assuming is mathematically received as “a bunch” of electromagnetic pulses across the globe, not only deactivating all of the human/sentinel hybrids, but also heavily damaging humanity’s infrastructure.

Wolverine astutely notes that Magneto has declared war.

Oh yeah, then Professor X returns.

This is amazing storytelling. I’m so excited to see where this season is going.
