What if Nebula was in Blade Runner?: Marvel’s What If…? episode 1 review

I’m always amazed when Marvel gets so many actors from the MCU to come back and voice their animated characters in What It Is It? What If? The first episode of season two, “What If… Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?” enlisted six folks to reprise their MCU role! That, of course, includes the star of the episode, everyone’s favorite daughter of Thanos…. Nebula!

The episode lifts its style heavily from the Blade Runner films. The film noir really suited this style as Nebula joined the Nova Corps in this reality and is called in to investigate the death of Yondu. Nova Prime activated a planetary shield that locked down Xander for 50 years, and our buddy Yondu just so happened to have a diagram of how to break in and disable the shield generator.

The surprises are always great in What If? episodes, and this one didn’t disappoint. Howard the Duck running a casino as a quasi-mob boss? Oh yeah, and Korg is his bartender? AND Drax and Groot were there? Just hilarious. I love when Marvel gets goofy.

And, of course, betrayal features heavily in a Nebula story. It was easy to see coming (at least one of them was), but it still felt impactful.

Nebula putting on Yondu’s fin like Kraglin in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. She looked cool in it.

Closing lines in these episodes is always important, and Nebula nailed it: “I’ll see you around, duck.”

I’ve always enjoyed the way that Marvel has done this What If series. They do such a great job with it. There are times that I wish Star Wars would do something similar, but I do enjoy the way that Star Wars does Visions.
