I am Sally Jackson’s son!: Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 2 review

I enjoyed episode two of Percy Jackson, and it’s making me (and my almost-8 year old step daughter) want to pick and read these books. It was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to see where the story is going.

When Percy woke up from his coma and ran into Dionysus, I cackled. I completely forgot that Jason Mantzoukas was cast in this show and what an absolute perfect casting this was. I don’t know what his role will be in the series going forward (as I’ve said, I haven’t read the series before or seen the previous two movies), but I’m excited. I love Mantzoukas. (🗣️GEOSTORM!)

I’m really glad that Percy’s mom is still alive. I understand the trope of killing off the parent (usually solo guardian) of our hero before they begin their journey, but I’m glad she’s coming back. And why?

“I am Sally Jackson’s son!” was definitely said by a boy that loves and respects his mother. Wow. That was a powerful moment, and I fist pumped.

The camp was really interesting. The implied joke that the gods are out having wild amounts of sex had me laughing out loud. Obviously, Percy was going to undergo some tribulations at camp, but I think they worked out in a good way.

I really liked Charlie Bushnell as Luke and Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth. Those were good characters. Are we going to end up with four of the kids on the adventure together or is it a trio? Who is getting left out in that case, Grover (Aryan Simhadri) or Luke?

The kid and I would pause the episode to talk about things to make sure we both understand what was happening. I have a little base knowledge of the Greek gods, so that helped. I’m thrilled that she’s into the show, and I think she’s going to want to read the Rick Riordan books at some point. She loves to read.

I also want to shout out the fight choreography in the capture the flag game. That was terrific, and I was engaged throughout. The fight on the beach was really great. I loved that.

So far, the season is living up to the hype, and we’re going to keep watching!
